Second Grade Curriculum

Language Arts
Our reading program is a blend of the basal textbook and supplemental materials to focus on phonetics and structural analysis, vocabulary development, independent reading skills, comprehension strategies, narrative and expository writing and spelling mastery.
Accelerated Reader is an independent reading program that allows students to move at their own pace and reading ability.  The program tracks each student’s progress and provides daily feedback to the student, parent, and teacher.  Your child will be taking home a book to read every night.
In the beginning of second grade our writing program continues to focus on sentence structure and beginning a sentence with a capital letter and ending with appropriate punctuation.  By the end of second grade, our goal is for students to be able to write between 3-5 paragraphs on a given topic.

Math
We will continue to use Everyday Mathematics, which is a complete K-6 mathematics curriculum.  This program emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of the basic skills.  We will use hands-on manipulatives and problem solving to extend the basic concepts of place value, addition, subtraction, and measurement.  Everyday Mathematics is based on how children learn, what their interests are, and the future for which they must be prepared.
Second grade students should have addition and subtraction facts memorized by the end of the year.  If your child still has to count for basic single digit computation, please work with the child on learning the facts.  Mathematics flashcards would be helpful.

Science
Our science concepts are centered around the areas of matter, sound, weather, plants and animals, and the solar system.

Social studies
The themes involve studying cultures of the past and present.  We will focus on citizenship skills, economics, and geography and mapping skills.

Please make sure you check your child’s agenda/planner for daily homework assignments and sign off each night.

**You are the most important piece in your child’s success and we look forward to working with you this year!
